Final Showcase: Build Your Farm System

"Farm System Integration"

📺 Watch & learn: Best Chicken Coop & Integrated Garden Tour

1

Today's Goal

Today’s Goal

Students will integrate all prior learning (incubation, brooding, nutrition, health, housing, composting, growth, and egg production) to design and present a complete urban chicken farm system.

2

Key Learning Points

A chicken farm is an interconnected system Feed, water, shelter, and health all depend on each other Small system failures affect the entire flock Farmers are designers, managers, and problem-solvers Agriculture is both science and entrepreneurship Collaboration improves system success

3

Teacher's Talking Script

“Today you are not just students — you are farm designers.” “Every decision you make affects the living system.” “Real farmers think in systems, not parts.”

4

Warm-Up Game

“SYSTEMS CHAIN REACTION”

Instructions

Students form a circle. Instructor starts with one system: Feed, Water, Housing, Health, Compost. Each student must say how that system affects another. Example: “Feed affects egg production.”

What It Teaches

Systems thinking Cause and effect relationships Interconnected agriculture

5

Demonstration

“FULL FARM MODEL WALKTHROUGH”

Materials

Large poster or floor layout Labels (coop, run, feed, water, compost, nesting) Scenario problem cards

Demonstration Steps

Show full farm layout: Coop placement, Run area, Feed and water zones, Compost system, Waste flow cycle. Teacher line: “A real farm is a connected loop — not separate pieces.”

6

Main Game

“BUILD YOUR URBAN CHICKEN FARM CHALLENGE”

Game Purpose: Teams design a complete urban chicken farm system.

How It Works

Each team must include — Livestock System: number of hens, age stage planning. Housing System: coop design, run design, predator protection. Nutrition System: feed plan, water system. Health System: biosecurity plan, cleaning schedule. Sustainability System: compost or waste management.

Twist Cards (Instructor Adds Live)

Disease outbreak Feed shortage Predator attack Heat wave Water system failure

How to Win — Scoring

System completeness (5 pts) Problem-solving response (5 pts) Sustainability integration (5 pts) Team presentation clarity (5 pts) Creativity + realism (5 pts) Highest score = “Master Urban Farmer Team”.

Fun Fact

💡

Did You Know?

Some urban farms recycle nearly 100% of waste back into compost and soil systems, creating a closed-loop food system.

Instructor Notes

Emphasize

This is your evaluation + celebration day. Focus on: Leadership emergence, Team collaboration, Systems understanding, Confidence building. Teach phrase: “Farmers are system builders.” Common Evaluation Criteria: Does the farm make sense logically? Are systems connected properly? Is sustainability included? Can students explain their design clearly?

12

Extension Challenge

Home Mission

“FUTURE FARMER DESIGN PROJECT” — Students create: Full farm blueprint, System explanation, Improvement plan. Bonus: GRADUATION OUTCOME — Students complete: Chicken lifecycle mastery; Urban farming systems thinking; Hands-on agricultural science; Problem-solving under real-world conditions; Team leadership experience. Completed at home Shared with family Ready to present next session
