Behavior, Natural Diet & Foraging

"Chickens in Their Element"

📺 Watch & learn: Chickens for Kids — Foraging & More

1

Today's Goal

Today’s Goal

Students will understand natural chicken behaviors, foraging instincts, and the role of diet diversity in creating healthy, balanced flocks.

2

Key Learning Points

Chickens are natural foragers and explorers Pecking, scratching, and dust bathing are normal behaviors A varied diet improves health and egg quality Foraging supports physical and mental well-being Chickens establish a “pecking order” social system

3

Teacher's Talking Script

“Chickens were not designed to live in cages.” “Their behavior tells you what they need.” “Foraging is exercise, food, and entertainment all in one.”

4

Warm-Up Game

“CHICKEN INSTINCT” CHARADES

Instructions

Students take turns acting out chicken behaviors: Pecking ground, Scratching dirt, Dust bathing, Roosting (sleeping high), Strutting (rooster mode), Mother hen calling chicks. Group guesses each behavior.

What It Teaches

Behavior recognition Empathy with animals Observation skills

5

Demonstration

“THE FORAGING TABLE”

Materials

A tray or floor area Mixed natural items: leafy greens, seeds, mealworms (optional), grass clippings, vegetable peels

Demonstration Steps

Spread natural foods on the foraging table. Explain how chickens scratch and search. Discuss benefits: better digestion, mental stimulation, balanced diet. Teacher line: “Foraging gives chickens their freedom — and their flavor.”

6

Main Game

“DESIGN A CHICKEN PARADISE”

Game Purpose: Teams design the best chicken environment using natural elements.

How It Works

Each team gets a worksheet or outdoor space and must include: Food zone (forage-friendly), Water source, Shade, Dust bath area, Roosting spot, Predator-safe boundary.

Twist Cards (Instructor Adds Live)

Bossy rooster Bored hens Squirrel stealing food Hot weather

How to Win — Scoring

Realistic environment (5 pts) Behavior support (5 pts) Problem-solving (5 pts) Team creativity (5 pts) Highest “Happy Flock Score” wins.

11

Instructor Notes

Emphasize

Reinforce respect for animal instincts. Highlight that natural behaviors = healthier birds. Teach phrase: “Healthy chickens act like chickens.”

Common Beginner Mistakes

Keeping chickens in only one space Not allowing dust baths Ignoring pecking order conflicts Feeding only commercial feed without variety

12

Extension Challenge

Home Mission

Create a “Backyard Foraging Map” identifying safe natural foods chickens can eat in your area. Bonus: Research one wild plant chickens love and one toxic plant to avoid. Completed at home Shared with family Ready to present next session
